Our top 6 dog walks in the Stamford and Peterborough area

We know you love a good dog walk, or more specifically, finding some new snifftastic places for your pooches to explore.

Lucky for you, we’ve found a few in and around Stamford and Peterborough, and given them a little test run. (Well, along with my working cocker spaniel Wilson!)

Whether you’re looking for an accessible dog walk with a wheelchair or pushchair, or fancy delving deep into woodland, we’ve got a walk to suit everyone and all abilities.

Wilson’s also given his own review, as that’s what really counts, right? Happy dog, happy life!

Some of these walks are close to the pet shop, so you can make a day of it when you come to visit (and we get doggy cuddles, so win-win).

The River Welland Walk

Just 10 minutes from the Pet Shop, this dog walk starts in Deeping St James. It’s pretty quiet too, and mostly alongside the river for some off-lead time for those dogs that have a solid recall! Luckily, Wilson has this skill nailed.  You can see the nature reserve on the walk (no dogs allowed) and there are plenty of places to stop and admire the views. Wilson rated this with an overall 5 out of 5.

Stamford Walks – Barholm to Uffington

Another 10 minutes from the Pet Shop and you’re in the middle of the Lincolnshire countryside. From Barholm, you’ll set off across fields and a railway line, ending up in Uffington, where you can stop for food and refreshments, or continue your walk into Stamford. This is more of an on-lead walk because of all the fields of crops you’ll venture through, and parts are a little overgrown. It does, however, make for a quiet walk!

Fineshade Woods and Trails

If you’ve not explored Fineshade yet, you’re in for a treat. It’s a 30-minute drive from the Pet Shop, not far from Stamford, with huge woodlands to explore. Different trails are marked with different walking times, adventure play areas to keep little ones entertained, and the all-important café for coffee and cake. If you’re a National Trust member, parking is free!

Fen Way Walk

If you’ve never explored the fens before this is a great place to start. This is Cobit Wash, a flood plain and you can follow the bank for miles! It’s really expansive and open so you can easily see if dogs are coming in the other direction, and great for plenty of off-lead fun. The water current in the Welland can be pretty strong, so if you’ve got a frequent swimmer you might be better with a long line.

Hambleton Peninsula Walk

This is a gorgeous walk near Rutland Water. It’s a 40 minute drive but we think it’s worth it! It’s super accessible as it’s on a level path with some stunning lake and countryside views. There is a lot of livestock around so this is an on-lead walk at all times. If you dislike mud in the winter months, this one’s for you!

Penfield Nature Reserve Langtoft

If you don’t want to travel far, how’s 5 minutes for you? This nature reserve was previously a quarry, now full of pathways, abundant wildlife and picturesque views. There are areas marked where dogs are not allowed to so follow the signs at all times. You can even extend this walk to Baston if you’re feeling particularly energetic! This is one of Wilsons favourites, and one of mine, because I don’t need to go too far!
