Hambleton Peninsula Walk

Today, we’re heading to Hambleton Village to take a walk around the popular Hambleton Peninsula Walk, which borders Rutland Water. 

Fun fact: Rutland is the smallest County in the UK!

Hambleton Village is a pleasant 40-minute drive from the Pet Shop heading out west through Stamford and onto the A606. 

Hambleton Peninsula is a perfect walk for those muddy months as it’s on a level path around Rutland Water with beautiful lake and countryside views. You might even come across a sheep or two around the Peninsula, so it’s leads on!

Hambleton Peninsula Walk Details

Start: Hambleton Village (LE15 8TH)

Time to Travel from the Pet Shop: Approx 40 mins/20 miles

Length of Walk: Approx 6 miles

Time of Walk: Approx 1.5 hours

Dog friendly cafe: There are many dog friendly cafes and pubs nearby or head into Stamford on the way home and explore the town’s boutique shops and Friday street market.

Off Lead: On the lead at all times as livestock around

In Wilson’s Bag: Water Bottle, Treats, Poop Bags, Drying Towel

Wilson Sets Off to Hambleton Peninsula

Wilson: The sun is shining and I can see Mum getting a few bits together. I hear my name being called and off we go to the car. This is exciting – another adventure with Mum. I wonder where we’re going today?

When we arrive, as I get out of the car and on my lead, I can feel the fresh breeze blowing my ears and through my coat.  I can see water for as far as the eye can see. Yipeee! Where are we Mum?

 

Interesting Facts about Hambleton Peninsula and Rutland Water

This part of Hambleton is the only part of the town which remained after the reservoir, Rutland Water, was created in 1975/1976. Rutland Water itself covers almost 3100 acres and is one of the largest man-made lakes in Europe. I tell Wilson this, but he doesn’t seem too impressed; he’s more interested in getting going! 

Hambleton sits almost inside Rutland Water, which is a beautiful area for walking, cycling, and sailing. Just one of the many walks you can take around Rutland Water. You can find out more about the area at Discover Rutland.

We took the 6-mile circular walk around the Hambleton Peninsula. The walk hugs the shore of Rutland Water pretty much the whole way. It is really a great walk on a mild day when you want to be close to the water.

Where to park in Hambleton

To begin the walk, we parked our car on the side of the road just before the bend as you enter Hambleton Village.

From there you can simply go through the gate or stay on the road and walk into the village to start your walk there.

This route is very well signposted all the way around, and as the pathways hug the water’s shoreline it is quite easy to follow. You can pick up the route in several places, and you can also adjust the length of the walk and even lengthen it to include more of the reservoir.

The Walk around Hambleton Peninsula

Wilson: I’m on my lead for this walk as there are lots of sheep and we need our space! I  need to keep out of the water as algae might be present. (Mum says this is really harmful to us dogs).

There are stunning views wherever you turn and the route travels through lovely woods too. I loved walking in the woods and Mum made me pose for some cute photos with the bluebells.

It’s a quiet walk today with not many humans or paw friends around to disrupt our peaceful walk. The route has a proper path, so no need for a paw wash today either – result!

As we finish our walk around Hambleton Peninsula, Mum got my drink bottle out and she brought me a tasty treat too, I do love her. I sat and watched as Mum took in the view over Rutland Water for a moment and then we headed back home.
