Muzzles
Dog muzzles
Muzzles are used for a variety of reasons, but we strongly advise people not to buy them for controlling barking. This is very upsetting for the dog. Instead, get to the source of the barking and train them not to bark.
We advise the use of muzzles if you have a dog that is aggressive towards other dogs or people. They are also effective if you have a dog that eats other dog’s faeces, or dead animals.
How to train a dog to wear a muzzle
It is advisable to built them up to wearing it gradually rather than just put straight on for a walk.
To get the dog used to it give it a try for 2 minutes. Then a little more the next day building up to 10 minutes in a week. Each time you take it off give them a treat and some praise so they don’t see it as a negative.
A muzzle may also be worn while a dog is having its nails clipped or being groomed if it has become anxious and gets aggressive. Ideally in any situation a muzzle shouldn’t be worn for more than an hour.
